US-Israeli Missile Defense War Game Signals Israeli Attack on Iran

By Paul Craig Roberts (about the author) opednews.com Permalink

There’s no word in the Western press, but AlJazeera reports that the US and Israel are conducting tests of the high-altitude missile defense system that the US has provided to Israel.

The anti-missile system is useless against the short-range rockets of Hamas and Hezbollah. Its purpose is to protect Israel from longer-range Iranian missiles.

Everyone understands that Iran would not attack Israel except in retaliation. It is logical to conclude that the missile defense system signals an upcoming Israeli attack on Iran.

If the US were opposed to an Israeli attack on Iran, the US would not provide Israel with protection against retaliation and would not engage in war games with Israel to test the system. The best way to prevent an Israeli attack on Iran is to leave Israel open to retaliation.

This decision by the United States government is irresponsible in the extreme. It enables Israel to spread aggression in the Middle East. By signaling an attack, it would encourage a less cautious country than Iran to strike first before the Israeli missile defense system is operative.

The joint US-Israeli war games involving 2,000 troops from the US European Command, the Israeli Army, and 17 US Navy ships is further indication to the world that no matter what crimes the Israelis commit, the US will protect Israel from being held accountable.

In the world today, the US and Israel are the two threats to peace.

Northwest’s New Motto: “We’ll Get You Within 150 Miles of There”

Launches New Sleeper ServiceTM

MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report) – Trying to make the best of what could be a public relations disaster, Northwest Airlines today unveiled a new corporate slogan, “We’ll Get You Within 150 Miles of There.”

According to Carol Foyler, a Northwest spokesperson, the new slogan “reflects our dedication to getting our passengers as close as possible to their intended destination.”

Northwest timed the announcement of their new slogan to coincide with the launch of their new Sleeper ServiceTM.

The new sleeper service provides fully reclining seats, pillows and blankets for all travelers seated in the cockpit area.

According to Ms. Foyler, “Our new Sleeper Service TM should reassure all Northwest travelers that our pilots are the best-rested in the industry.”

In a related story, the two Northwest pilots who overshot Minneapolis said they were just trying to do publicity for the movie “Amelia.” More here.

Sy Hersh: Military ‘In War Against The White House’

hersh_9d8cd

So many of the saner people were driven out of the military during the Bush administration, it doesn’t surprise me that the people left include a lot of the right-wing, racist fringe elements. Still, it’s shocking to hear this:

DURHAM — The U.S. military is not just fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, America’s most renowned investigative journalist says.

Protestors shut down Ehud Olmert speech at University of Chicago

On 15 October 2009, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert came to give the annual King Abdullah II Leadership Lecture at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. Outraged that a man responsible for war crimes in Palestine and Lebanon that killed more than three thousand people during his term of office, community members confronted Olmert inside the lecture hall effectively preventing him from delivering his speech. The Goldstone report, examining Israel’s attack on Gaza last winter, while Olmert was prime minister, called for Israeli leaders to be held accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Recording and photography were officially banned at Olmert’s request, but The Electronic Intifada had a camera anyway as protestor after protestor rose to make a statement before police forced them to leave. Your Excellency,

RE DEFORMED BABIES IN FALLUJAH

Young women in Fallujah in Iraq are terrified of having children because of the increasing number of babies born grotesquely deformed, with no heads, two heads, a single eye in their foreheads, scaly bodies or missing limbs. In addition, young children in Fallujah are now experiencing hideous cancers and leukaemias. These deformities are now well documented, for example in television documentaries on SKY UK on September 1 2009, and on SKY UK June 2008. Our direct contact with doctors in Fallujah report that:

Mike’s Blog #1: ‘Pilots on Food Stamps’

This week, the new ‘Mike & Friends Blog’ section will be added to MichaelMoore.com. In additional to my blog, I have asked a few people, like Rep. Marcy Kaptur (the Democrat from Toledo who has deservedly become the star of my movie!) and Leah Fried (who helped organize the sit-down strike at Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago), to blog here on my site. Here’s a sneak peek of my first blog post. Enjoy! — MM

Pilots on Food Stamps
By Michael Moore

We’re on the descent from 20,000 feet in the air when the flight attendant leans over the elderly woman next to me and taps me on the shoulder.

“I’m listening to Lady Gaga,” I say as I remove just one of the ear buds. I know not this Lady Gaga, but her performance last week on SNL was fascinating.

“The pilots would like to see you in the cockpit when we land,” she says with a southern drawl.

“Did I do something wrong?”

“No. They have something to show you.” (The last time an employee of an airline wanted to show me something it was her written reprimand for eating an in-flight meal without paying for it. “Yes,” she said, “we have to pay for our own meals on board now.”)
