Syria

A Syrian voice

Here are two very moving posts by Maysaloon http://www.maysaloon.org/

Stop asking me how things are in Syria, I don’t know. I want the killing to stop, I want my family and every family to be OK, to be with their loved ones and to argue about silly little things that mean nothing. I want a return to the pettiness of every day life, of worries about raising children, of who to marry and what to wear. I want so much for all those people who died to come back, to say that it was all a bad dream and that we’re all going to be together again. I feel the childhood terror of losing your loved ones, of wanting them to be with you forever, where there is no illness, no death and no evil. But it seems that I want the impossible.

If the deaths and the suffering of all those people is not to go in vain, if this country is to heal again and if we are to know happiness once more, then Assad and his regime must go. They must. This cannot be allowed to go on.

Bab Amr

POSTED BY MAYSALOON AT 8:53 PM 0 COMMENTS

My country is in the grip of revolution, civil war and the mother of all international scheming and political intrigue. How can somebody try and articulate the sheer horror and despair that I – that all of us – feel about what’s been happening? At some point language just isn’t enough. I watch – without wanting to – video after video of people who have been killed there and I notice the pasty complexions and the glazed look of eyes that are no longer needed. A man or woman, sometimes a child, lie dead with lips that once kissed a loved one, hair that was once caressed, hands that were once held, but now destined for a slow corruption. It’s all so bloody awful. There is an aching pain in my chest that won’t go away and I’m so tired all the time.

Syria: citizens from across country risk life to help Homs

Shocked by the desperate plight of civilians in the besieged districts of Homs, citizens from other parts of Syria are risking their lives to smuggle in food and medicines.

Residents from Damascus and Aleppo told the Daily Telegraph of the secret operations to bring aid to those trapped in the bombardment.

Fearing punishment by the regime for helping the opposition, the medicines have to be hidden on the journey, explained Sana, 31, an Aleppo resident who has taken it upon herself to help.

“I travel by public minibus, hiding small amounts of medicines and money at the bottom of my bag,” said Sana, who has a nine year old son.

The road from Aleppo to Homs is strewn with checkpoints of the much feared Mukhabarat intelligence service. Stopping every vehicle, they compare identity cards against the now extensive list of people wanted for joining the Syrian opposition. Convoys of buses carrying Syrian troops are seen on the highway, along with military refuelling vehicles. Tanks are stationed strategically on bridges and in scrubland.

“If [the mukhabarat] found out, they would arrest me for helping the terrorists. But these are civilians,” said Sana. “They think anyone who opposes the government is a terrorist, so now Syria is a nation of terrorists.”

A 718-page digital document obtained by Mother Jones contains names, phone numbers, neighborhoods, and alleged activities of thousands of dissidents apparently targeted by the Syrian government. Three experts asked separately by Mother Jones to examine the document—essentially a massive spreadsheet, whose contents are in Arabic—say they believe that it is authentic. As Bashar al-Assad’s military continues a deadly crackdown on dissent inside the country, the list appears to confirm in explicit detail the scale of the regime’s domestic surveillance and its methodical efforts to destroy widespread opposition.

The Syrian referendum

Look at this man. You’d think he was the president of a thriving democracy and that he was busy on the campaign trail. Who is he kidding? Does he think the entire world is stupid? Whilst this photo was being taken, sixty Syrians were killed in Homs by his militias. In the video below he says that his regime will succeed on the ground and “in space”, wonderful…
