My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza’s Untold Story

12 décembre 2009 — And so I begin. His name was Mohammed Baroud, and he was a good man, is how Ramzy Baroud concludes the Foreword to his new book, and embarks on a chronicle so rare and so powerful that the book promises to redefine the way the Gaza story is told.

On December 27, 2009, Ramzy Barouds new book, My Father Was A Freedom Fighter: Gazas Untold Story, was released in London by Pluto Press, to coincide with the first anniversary of Israels so-called Operation Cast Lead, which killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, the vast majority of whom were civilians.

As the frontline in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, Gaza is constantly reported as a place of violence and terror. Ramzy Baroud’s memoir explores the daily lives of the people in that turbulent region: the complex human beings — revolutionaries, mothers and fathers, lovers, and comedians — who make Gaza so much more than just a disputed territory. At the heart of Baroud’s tale is the story of his father, who, driven out of his village to a refugee camp, took up arms to fight the Occupation, while trying to raise a family.

My Father Was A Freedom Fighter: Gazas Untold Story is the latest book by Palestinian-American journalist, author, and former Al-Jazeera producer Ramzy Baroud. Baroud is Editor-in-Chief of the Palestine Chronicle, and his work has been published in hundreds of newspapers and journals worldwide. His 2002 book, Searching Jenin: Eyewitness Accounts of the Israeli Invasion has received international recognition. His 2006 book, The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of a Peoples Struggle (Pluto Press, London) has won the praise of many scholars worldwide.

Support of the UK citizens given extended prison sentences for opposing Israeli War Crimes

Statement of support from Gazan Palestinian students and academics

We support and salute your willingness to suffer the consequences that come with demonstrating in a ‘free’ Western country against the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against us, the Palestinians of Gaza, crimes that the entire world witnessed.

PSCABI and TUA – An open letter in support of the UK citizens given extended prison sentences for opposing Israeli War Crimes

9 April 2010

Besieged Gaza, Palestine

We write to you as academics and student representatives of all academic institutions in the besieged Gaza Strip.

We support and salute your willingness to suffer the consequences that come with demonstrating in a ‘free’ Western country against the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against us, the Palestinians of Gaza, crimes that the entire world witnessed. Crimes perpetrated when the Israeli forces, the fourth most powerful military machine in the world, bolstered yearly by £27.5 million of UK arms supplies, killed an estimated 1,440 people—more than 430 children—and injured 5,500 others.

“Coalition to Break the Blockade on Gaza Announced”

Press Release

April 3, 2010

Istanbul, Turkey – Following months of preparation, a coalition
bringing together a number of organizations and movements working to
break Israel’s illegal blockade on Gaza was announced yesterday in
Istanbul. The coalition, comprised of the Turkey-based IHH (Insani
Yardim Vakfi) organization, the European Campaign to End the Siege on
Gaza (ECESG), the Greek Ship to Gaza campaign, the Swedish Ship to
Gaza campaign and the Free Gaza Movement, will launch a flotilla of
ships laden with cargo, media, parliamentarians, celebrities and
activists to Gaza next month.

The flotilla will be composed of at least eight vessels, including
three cargo ships, and will set sail from European ports starting on
May 3, reaching the port of Gaza later in the month. Over 500
passengers from more than 20 countries will take part, and over 5,000
tons of cargo, including cement, prefabricated housing, other building
materials, medical equipment, and educational supplies will be
delivered to Palestinians in Gaza.

The Free Gaza Movement has been launching ships to Gaza since August
2008, partnering with organizations and activists around the world on
these missions. In December 2009, IHH led a land convoy to Gaza that
brought tons of humanitarian aid and other supplies. In January 2010
the European Campaign brought 50 parliamentarians to Gaza in
solidarity with the Palestinian people and to witness the devastation
wrought by Israel’s illegal policies. Ship to Gaza/Greece and Ship to
Gaza/Sweden meanwhile have had ongoing campaigns in their countries to
raise awareness and funds for this effort and for materials to be
brought to Gaza.

“Through this coalition, these organizations will be able to maximize
resources, experience and commitment to ending the illegal siege on
Gaza. Even as Israel continues its daily persecution of Palestinians,
we will use this action to wake the world’s consciousness about the
crimes committed against Palestinians,” said IHH President Bulent
Yildirim.

The coalition invites organizations and individuals from around the
world to join the effort by providing supplies for Gaza and
contributing financial support for the mission.

Israel threatens more Gaza attacks

Three Palestinian children have been wounded after Israeli planes and helicopters launched a string of air attacks on the Gaza Strip overnight.

The Israelis claimed that the air raids were in response to rocket fire from Gaza, but Hamas which runs the Palestinian enclave blamed the Israelis for the escalating tensions.

According to Palestinian medical sources, at least seven missiles targeted various Gaza sites.

Children of Gaza

source

A moving, must-see video that first aired on Channel 4 (UK)’s Dispatches on 15 March. BAFTA-winning filmmaker Jezza Neumann follows the lives of three children for over a year. The children are amazing: well-spoken, reflective, resilient, understandably vengeful and fearful, but very endearing. The toll this inhumanity has taken is also clear.

Documentary filmmaker Jezza Neumann writes about his experiences while making The Children of Gaza.

Gaza’s youth not ‘superfluous’

The Boston Globe

By Yousef Munayyer
March 3, 2010

‘TO CUT down on gang-related crimes, policies could be put in place to curb the African-American population growth in places like Harlem and Compton. The government could consider cutting off welfare benefits for families in these urban areas to discourage births of blacks and cut down the supply of ‘superfluous young men’ who have nothing else to do in their lives but be preyed on by criminal gang leaders who give them a sense of belonging. Ultimately these policies are an effective way to limit gang related crimes.’’
