Michael Steele Opposing the Troops in Afghanistan

one can hardly hear him but here goes
RNC Fundraiser Noank, CT.

Around 3:30 Michael Steele starts discussing the Obama Administration’s prosecution of the war in Afghanistan. “The [General] McChrystal incident, to me, was very comical. I think it’s a reflection of the frustration that a lot of our military leaders has with this Administration and their prosecution of the war in Afghanistan. Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama’s choosing. This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in. It was one of those areas of the total board of foreign policy [that was at least?] that we would be in the background sort of shaping the changes that were necessary in Afghanistan as opposed to directly engaging troops. But it was the President who was trying to be cute by half by building a script demonizing Iraq, while saying the battle really should in Afghanistan. Well, if he is such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? Alright, because everyone who has tried over a thousand years of history has failed, and there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan…”

Sy Hersh: Military ‘In War Against The White House’

hersh_9d8cd

So many of the saner people were driven out of the military during the Bush administration, it doesn’t surprise me that the people left include a lot of the right-wing, racist fringe elements. Still, it’s shocking to hear this:

DURHAM — The U.S. military is not just fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, America’s most renowned investigative journalist says.

Afghans Trained by Blackwater Defect to Taliban

October 15, 2008 (republished on October 12,2009)
Remember when Sarah Palin said that “the surge principles that have worked in Iraq need to be implemented in Afghanistan.” Well…as Ms. Palin would say, many Afghans working for the Afghan security forces are now switching sides and are now defecting to the Taliban.

Guess who trained many of them? Blackwater!

An Aljazeera producer was able to interview some of those defectors who were unafraid to reveal their identities and were not bashful about their Blackwater issued IDs.

Afghanistan is not Iraq. The surge methods will not work in Afghanistan. Hamid Karzai’s government is on the verge of collapse and it will be hard paying off the Taliban not to attack its forces.

This video is pretty revealing.

US Embassy: Brews, Brawls, Butt Sniffing and Prostitutes

KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S. Embassy in Kabul said it is joining the inquiry into claims that some of its private security guards practiced hazing rituals, sexual activity and intimidation.

“A full review of local guard force policies and procedures is under way and a full investigation is ongoing,” said an embassy statement released Thursday.

“Embassy officials continue to interview guard force personnel as a part of the investigation, to assess the need for possible suspensions and terminations.”

Along with the investigation, the embassy has also banned alcohol at Camp Sullivan, the facility at which the guards live.

The allegations about the guards’ behavior were reported by the watchdog group Project On Government Oversight.

The group sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and briefed reporters on its findings, which it said were based on e-mails and interviews with more than a dozen guards who had worked at the U.S. compound in the Afghan capital.

Should initiation rituals such as hazing be allowed?
